The Monument to the Unknown Hero (Serbian: Споменик Незнаном јунаку / Spomenik Neznanom junaku) is located atop Mt. Avala in Serbia, south-east of the capital, Belgrade, and was designed by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

Memorial was built on the location of Žrnov fortress.

The construction of this monument was ordered by King Alexander I of Yugoslavia, to commemorate the victims of World War I. Marked only by the dates 1912-1918, the monument also commemorates those lost in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913).

In order to show his support for Yugoslav unity, the King ordered that this monument include caryatids representing all the nations over which he governed following the creation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. They represent Serb woman from Šumadija (Šumadinka); a woman from Slavonia and Vojvodina (Panonka), a woman from Montenegro (Crnogorka) and Kosovo (Kosovka); Croat women from Dalmatia (Dalmatinka) and Zagorje (Zagorka); one Slovene and one Macedonian woman.

The Monument to the Unknown Hero was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1987, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia. Reed more...

A half year ago i have been first time in Novi Sad (hungarian: Újvidék, german: Neusatz, slovak: Nový Sad, rusyn and serbian: Нови Сад). This multiethnic city is second largest city in Serbia (after Belgrade) and it is administrative seat of serbian province Vojvodina in northern part of country. It lies on the left bank of the Danube river, across from Petrovaradin. IMHO, Novi Sad is very nice place to live. This postcard i've got from Judit. Thank you Judit! I've bought some postcards when i've been to Novi Sad, but i didn't saw this kind od postcards, only huge formats.

Another great map card in my small map-collection :) I've got it from Ana. I was only once in Belgrade. The Kalemegdan Fortress was one of some places i have visited. I think that Kalemegdan is a real symbol of Belgrade. Hvala ti Ana! Neću zalutati :)

Serbian monasteries (from BraveJ)

Serb Orthodox monasteries are found throughout the Croatia, Canada, United States, Greece, Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro. This foundation of monasteries followed the forming of the first semi-independent Serbian states (under Byzantine rule) starting in the 10th century. The first monasteries were built in the Raška region, in the Southwestern Serbia, then Kosovo and finally in Central Serbia. Fleeing the Turkish tyranny, the majority of Serbs migrated to the North. Shortly thereafter, the first monasteries on the Fruška Gora Mountain were established.

On the postcard you can see those monasteries: Ravanica, Stara Pavlica, Studenica, Bukovo and Patriarchate of Peć. Patriarchate of Peć (the last picutre) is listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site list. That monastery is the spiritual seat and mausoleum of the Serbian archbishops and patriarchs.

Jelena Janković (Serbian: Јелена Јанковић, born February 28, 1985) is a former World No. 1 Serbian professional tennis player. Janković has reached the singles final of the US Open and the singles semifinals of the Australian Open and the French Open. In 2007, she became the first Serbian player to win a Grand Slam Title when she won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title with British partner Jamie Murray.

Sopoćani Monastery, Serbia (from BraveJ & anagahan)

The Sopoćani monastery (Serbian Cyrillic: Сопоћани), an endowment of King Stefan Uroš I of Serbia, was built in the second half of the 13th century, near the source of the Raška River in the region of Ras, the centre of the Serbian medieval state. The church was dedicated to the Holy Trinity and completed around 1265, with interior decorated shortly thereafter. Archbishop Sava II, who became the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1263, is represented in the procession of archbishops in the area of the altar. The frescoes of Sopoćani are considered by some experts on Serbian medieval art as the most beautiful of that period. On the western wall of the nave is a famous fresco of the Dormition of the Virgin. In the 16th century the monks had to temporarily leave the monastery on several occasions due to the Ottoman threat. Finally, during one raids in 1689 the Ottoman Turks set fire to the monastery and carried off the lead from the church roof. The brotherhood escaped with some important relics to Kosovo - but did not return to Sopoćani; it remained deserted for over two hundred years, until the 20th century. The church slowly decayed: its vaults caved in, its dome fell down, and the remains of the surrounding buildings were covered with rubble and earth.

Finally, during the 20th century the monastery was restored and today it is settled by a thriving brotherhood of dedicated monks. The fact that most of the Sopoćani frescoes still shine with radiant beauty - surviving more than two centuries of extreme exposure to the elements - many consider nothing less than a divine miracle.

The Zemun Port Authority (Zemunska kapetanija) was built in 1908. It was here that ships came to port on their regular lines along the Danube, including the Belgrade - Budapest - Vienna line. Today, the building houses a restaurant and an arts gallery "Stara kapetanija".
